Based on the feedbacks received from the applicants the Passport Office, Mumbai , Passport Office ,Pune has prepared 'FAQs ' which will clear many doubts of the applicants. The 'FAQs ' will be continuously updated to add more information. The FAQs are provided Topic wise. Feedback are welcome.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS

Quest : I got my passport from Chennai. Now I have shifted to Mumbai. Should I change my address in the passport?..If change is required what are the documents required and how much time will it take?
It is upto you to change the address. But it is always better if your passport holds your current address. For this you have to produce proof of stay in Mumbai. Fill up the EAP-II form and submit along with your passport and a xerox copy of the passport.

We will send a letter to Passport Office, Chennai for No objection from them. Generally it takes 4 weeks as clearance is required from the issuing authority i.e Chennai.

EMIGRATION CHECK NOT REQUIRED

Quest : I have taken my passport at Passport Office, Hyderabad two years back. At that time I was not given ECNR since I could not produce my degree certificate. I would like to get ECNR from Pune Passport Office. I have been staying in Pune for the last two years. Is it possible for me to get ECNR at Passport Office, Pune?
It is possible to get ECNR service from Passport Office,

Pune- You have to produce the following
a) Proof of stay in Pune for the last one year such as ration card or telephone bill or running bank account or letter from the employer. (Employer should be a reputed concern if it is private).

b) Xerox copy of your degree certificate along with original

Fill up the EAP-II form duly filled and submit your passport along with the above documents. You will be granted ECNR.

Quest : I do not have the convocation certificate of my degree. I have provisional certificate issued by the Principal of the college where I studied. Can I get ECNR service?
If you don't have convocation certificate, you can get ECNR service by producing the provisional certificate along with all the years/semesters' mark lists.

Quest : Please list who are all eligible for ECNR service
a) All Gazetted Government servants.

b) All Income-Tax payers ( Including Agricultural Income Tax payers) in their individual capacity.( Need to produce Actual Tax-paid receipts along with acknowledgements for the last 3 years.)

c) All Professional degree holders such as Doctors holding M.B.B.S Degrees in Ayurved, or Homeopathy accredited journalists, Engineers, Charted Accountants, Cost Accountants, Lecturers, Teachers, Scientists, Advocates etc.

d) Spouses and dependent children upto the age of 24 years of Professional degree holders and Gazetted Govt. Servants.

e) All the persons who have been staying abroad for more than three years (continuously or broken periods) and their spouses and children upto the age of 24 years.

f) All holders of Diplomatic/Official Passports.

g) Seamen who are in possession of CDC and sea cadets.

h) Dependent children upto the age of 24 years of Parents whose passport is classified as ECNR.

i) Persons holding permanent immigration Visas for UK, USA and Australia.

j) Persons holding Graduate or higher Degrees.

k) Persons holding 3 years Diploma equivalent to degree from recognised Institution like Polytechnics.

l) Nurses possessing qualifications recognised under the Indian Nursing Council Act, 1947.

m) All persons above the age of 60 years.

Quest : I am a salaried person and the tax is deducted from salary. What are the documents I need to produce to get the ECNR?
Form 16(a) for the last 3 years along with copies of acknowledgements of your returns.

FRESH PASSPORT IN LIEU OF EXPIRED PASSPORT

Quest : My passport was expired 4 years back. Can I renew it. If so, what have to be done?
If your passport was issued for 5 years initially then it can be renewed for another 5 years from the date of expiry. For this you fill up EAP-II form and submit with your passport. If your passport was issued by other passport offices/Mission abroad proof of stay in Mumbai should be produced .

But if the 10 years validity is over, then you have to apply for a fresh passport in lieu of old passport irrespective of when it expired.

• You have to apply by filling EAP-I form with your old passport and Xerox copy of the old passport.
  
  
• You have to also produce proof of stay for the present address.
  
  
• Govt./Public Sector/Statutory body employees should submit
  
  
• "No Objection" Certificate in Original (Annexure E).

TIPS : Passport holders whose passport expired 4 or 5 years back also can get new passport in this manner. Passport holders whose validity is less than one year also can get new passport in this manner.

FILLING UP THE APPLICATION FORMS

Ques : I have downloaded an application form for passport from the site. However in the column 22 of the page 4 where specimen signatures of the applicant are required it says put the signatures also on the stickers provided. The option which is not available on the net. Please suggest me the needful and oblige.
In case of applications downloaded from the web site the applicant has to put the signatures only in the boxes provided below column 22. There is no need for stickers since the same is not available with the forms downloaded from the net.

INCLUSION OF SPOUSE NAME

Quest : I got my passport 2 years back. I got married recently. Should I include my wife's name in my passport? If so, what is the procedure?
It is better if you include your spouse name in your passport. You can avail 'Inclusion of Spouse Name' Service. You submit EAP -I form duly filled and submit with marriage certificate, wife's passport copy (if she has got) or Joint Affidavit and proof of stay (if the present address is different from the one in passport).

Note : The procedure is same if one wants to include her husband's name in the passport.

MAIDEN NAME TO MARRIED NAME

Quest : I am working in a software company at Mumbai for the last 2 years. I would like to apply for passport for my wife. I have residence proof certificate issued by Canara Bank. Is Marriage registration certificate mandatory? Or Is it enough if my company issues a letter stating my wife's Name?
Marriage certificate is not mandatory to get a passport for your wife if she is applying for passport first time. She may apply for passport in EAP -I form with requisite documents like residence proof and date of birth.

PROOF OF STAY

Quest : I am having a running bank account in Syndicate bank from June 98.In that I have given my uncle's address. From July 98 I am staying in present address. But I have changed my address in the passbook this month. Can I produced it as proof of residence?. My ration card is in my native place. Also I have an appointment order which I got last month. Can I produce this?
For the purpose of issue of passport proof of stay for the preceding one year is required. You can give your present address in column 6(1) and your uncle's address in column 7. In totality you will be furnishing the addresses where you have resided for the past one year. you can produce the bank passbook copy as your proof of stay. The first three pages of the pass book(the page which bears your address and the page which shows when you have started the account) will suffice.For the proof of stay of the present address you could also produce a rental agreement or a letter from your company stating you present address and the period of stay.

Quest : I have shifted to Thane 8 months back from Kerala. I have to apply for a passport. I have a running bank account for 8 months only. Online instruction says one should have stayed for atleast one year at Thane to apply. Shall I apply for a passport at passport Office, Thane?.If so pl. le me know the procedure.
Yes. You can apply at Passport Office, Thane. You can produce the running bank account for the last 8 months. You have to mention the previous address also in the application form. You have to submit 2 extra personal Particualrs form.

Police enquiry will be conducted at both the addresses. After getting clear verification reports from both the places only passport will be issued to you.

PASSPORT FOR MINORS

Quest : I have a son, for whom we wanted a passport
(1)We wanted to know whether we can submit the birth certificate, proof of address , photo copy of passports of both the parents along with the application form or do we need to produced additional separate affidavit, if so please give us the details.

(2) For minor thumb impression partly on photos which are pasted to the application is required?

(3) Is declaration form to be signed by both parents? Please give us more details on these points.

The following documents should be enclosed along with an application for a minor
(a) Copy of birth certificate

(b) Parents passport copies

(c) Proof of Stay documents

In cases where the application is submitted directly at our office originals of all the above said documents should be produced and it will be duly attested by the counter official. In cases where the application is sent by post duly attested copies of the above documents may be sent. Both Parents of the minor should sign the declaration on Page4. In case only one of the parents is signing the declaration the other should give an affidavit stating that he/she has no objection for the issue of passport to the minor child and his/her name is not included in their passport.

In case one of the parent is abroad he/she should give a declaration that he has no objection for the issue of passport to his/her minor child and the name of the child is not included in his/her passport This declaration should be attested by the Indian Mission abroad.

Quest : I have a passport. I have become father to a baby boy one month ago. I need to go abroad shortly. Do I need to apply for my son name to be included in my passport or do I need to apply separate passport for him?.If I have to apply for separate passport for my son what about his signature?
You need to apply for a separate passport for your son.As per ammended law all the minors have to obtain a separate passport. You need to take thumb impression of the child wherever necessary.

Quest : In case of minor's passport of age 4, whose father is abroad, whether consent is to be obtained to apply for a passport?. If so, what is the procedure?
Yes. Consent of the father is required to apply for a passport. It should be in the form of sponsorship declaration to be attested by the Indian Embassy.

TATKAL SCHEME

Quest : I have made my application with the passport office (Mumbai) yesterday. I am applying under TATKAL Scheme. However, there is little information on how to go ahead with the verification. Does the verification have to be at the local police station or can I get the annexure G verified through any GM of a public sector organisation as mentioned in the web site?

Verification can be done by the applicant in the following ways
(a) The applicant can expedite the police report .

(b) He can get the annexure G verified any one of the officers mentioned in the list.( This includes GM of a PSU of the Govt. Of India.)

(c) He can get the verification certificate from the Commissioner of Police.

Quest : I have to travel to UK next week on a company assignment. I don’t have passport. Can u tell me how to get a new passport on tatkal scheme?
First submit your application (EAP-I) at Passport Office, Mumbai. Then you have to expedite your police report or get a verification certificate as per annexure G of the passport application. You should have proof for your urgent travel to UK like invitation from your client in UK.

Please get appointment in the ENQUIRY COUNTER of the Passport Office and meet the Passport Officer/Asst. Passport officer. Based upon your clear police report (or Verification certificate) and Urgency proof you will be given priority and asked to collect the passport on the date given by the Passport Officer/Asst. passport officer. You pay the tatkal fee at the payment counter. Collect your passport at passport office on the date given by the Passport Officer/Asst. passport officer.

Quest : What is the difference between Re-issue and Renewal?
Passports are Re-issued after the expiry of their 10/20 year validity period. The term Re-issue is used when a new passport is required after the expiry of old passport. (For instructions on how to apply for re-issue, please see the instructions section of this site).

If you had been issued a Short Validity Passport (i.e. a passport of validity less than 10 years), then you can apply for renewal to extend the validity of the passport to 10 years. For this service, form EAP-II is required to be filled in and submitted along with the copies of passport and photographs. Renewal is a miscellaneous service and is rendered within 3 days, provided the passport is issued by the same office.

Quest : How much time will it take to get a passport?
Fresh passports are issued, in general on receipt of a clear police/CID report. Therefore a precise time frame cannot be specified. However, on an average the time taken for various categories is as follows:
